Powering Modern Infrastructure

Portland, Tennessee, may be a small farm town, but the Strawberry Capital of Tennessee has a big impact on American energy.

Inside a 638,000-square-foot facility on the outskirts of Portland, hundreds of engineers and industrial operators are building, testing, and shipping critical electrical system components to energy projects across the country. These systems will never generate a single watt of electricity, but without them, power does not move.

Shoals was founded on the belief that U.S. manufacturing should lead the electrification revolution, and we will continue to invest in domestic production and create American jobs.”听 – Brandon Moss, Chief Executive Officer, Shoals Technologies Group

The Backbone of Modern Power Infrastructure

The solar and energy storage projects powering American homes, businesses, and data centers do not run on panels and batteries alone. Across Shoals’ operations in Tennessee and Alabama, production, engineering, logistics, and operations teams are working together to improve how they can build and deliver American power. Shoals creates electrical balance-of-systems (eBOS) 鈥 the integration hardware that moves power from generation to the grid. These intricate electrical systems tie energy projects together and play a critical role in how developers design, build, and bring power systems online.

Today, Shoals听works听with 14 of the top 15 EPCs in the U.S., with听systems deployed across tens of gigawatts of capacity in the U.S. and globally. The importance of this infrastructure is growing as electricity demand reaches levels not seen in decades.

Shoals’ new Portland facility will create approximately 550 industry jobs and indirectly support more than 1,400 additional jobs in the region.

Shoals has operated out of Portland since 1996, initially supplying components to the automotive industry before moving into solar in 2002. With energy storage playing a larger role on the grid, Shoals has expanded its platform to support battery energy storage systems, extending its plug-and-play approach to enable faster energy deployment.

In May 2026, Shoals officially opened its new, state-of-the-art manufacturing campus in Portland, consolidating three of its existing Tennessee facilities into one centralized operation. Backed by a $30 million investment with a total commitment of up to $80 million over five years, the new facility will add approximately 550 industry jobs and indirectly support more than 1,400 additional jobs in the region. The opening coincides with Shoals鈥 30th anniversary and reflects the company鈥檚 decades-long commitment to domestic manufacturing 鈥 now a strategic imperative as the clean energy sector scales to meet rising power demand affordably and reliably.

Shoals also operates a facility in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where the company manufactures custom junction boxes for solar projects across the country. The Alabama facility is reflected in the employee and investment figures cited on this page.

Strengthening American Supply Chains

Read the article

By onshoring manufacturing of key energy system components, American manufacturers are strengthening domestic production, reducing reliance on foreign supply chains, and enhancing energy security.

Surging electricity demand from artificial intelligence, data centers, and advanced manufacturing increases pressure on how quickly and reliably the grid can deliver power 鈹 and on the supply chains delivering that power.

“AI is no longer just a computing story. It is now a power infrastructure story. The scale and speed of demand growth are forcing the industry to rethink how electrical systems are designed, deployed, and scaled鈥Jeff听Tolnar, President, Shoals Technologies Group

Shoals has established one of the most important manufacturing operations for America鈥檚 clean energy supply chain. As solar projects scale, designing听eBOSsystemsthat are fully integrated (engineered into the system and pre-assembled before shipping)听is essential to project performance. Owners, developers, and EPCs are under increasing pressure to deliver on tighter timelines under evolving reliability requirements. Disruptions from shipping delays, port congestion, or global supply volatility carry serious schedule and financial costs. Onshoring manufacturing reduces that exposure to disruption by shortening lead times, streamlining coordination across the supply chain, and minimizing delivery interruptions.
